Jenny Seagrove in Incident at Victoria Falls

In 1991 (some sources say 1992), Jenny Seagrove appeared in her second Sherlock Holmes project, Incident at Victoria Falls. Previously, she had co-starred as Miss Mary Morstan in a 1987 production of The Sign of Four. In Incident at Victoria Falls, Jenny Seagrove portrays historical figure Lillie Langtry and other historical figures are also present, including characterizations of Theodore Roosevelt, King Edward VII and Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi. Incident at Victoria Falls takes place circa 1910.

Incident at Victoria Falls was the second and final telefilm in the Sherlock Holmes: The Golden Years series. Sherlock Holmes was played by Christopher Lee and Dr. Watson was played by Patrick Macnee, both veteran UK actors. The project is really two full length features, at about 90 minutes apiece. A butchered version appeared in the USA, running approximately 90 minutes total. This heavily abridged version essentially removes Jenny Seagrove's role, allowing her to only appear during the climax at the end of the film. In the unabridged version, Jenny Seagrove has several scenes throughout the first part of the movie but is largely absent during the second section.

Jenny Seagrove, as Lillie Langtree, gets to wear a variety of costumes, ranging from elegant to flamboyant. She plays her part very well and brings a great deal of energy to the role. Jenny Seagrove delivers her usual charm and looks quite lovely too. Incident at Victoria Falls was one of her last projects before putting aside cinema and television work so she could return to the theater for most of the 1990s.

Jenny Seagrove in The Sign of Four

In 1987, Jenny Seagrove appeared as Miss Mary Morstan in The Sign of Four, a Sherlock Holmes story done for Granada Television in the UK. Jenny Seagrove co-starred alongside Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and Edward Hardwicke as Dr. Watson. Ronald Lacey, playing dual roles, is another highlight of this made-for-TV movie.

Throughout her career, Jenny Seagrove has always shone in period pieces and The Sign of Four is no exception. She had begun her career in earnest with The Woman in White, which took place in the mid-1800s, and went to be featured in a number of other projects set in the past.

Five years later Jenny Seagrove would be featured in another Sherlock Holmes project, Incident at Victoria Falls, playing the character Lillie Langtry.

Jenny Seagrove in Magic Moments

In 1989, Jenny Seagrove starred alongside John Shea in Magic Moments, a Harlequin Romance Movie. The made-for-cable TV movie was based upon the book 'This Magic Moment' by Nora Roberts and was filmed in London and Madrid. A number of Harlequin Romance Movies were made in the late 1980s and were produced in association with the UK's Yorkshire Television. The titles were then shown on television and released on video in other countries.

Jenny Seagrove in In Like Flynn

1984 saw Jenny Seagrove have a successful year on television. She starred in two miniseries, Diana and A Woman of Substance, and guest starred in an episode of Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense. Her next project would be a pilot movie for a proposed TV series called In Like Flynn.

The concept for In Like Flynn was supposedly suggested by the successful film Romancing the Stone, but I think that some have overstated the connection. The ideas for the two projects only have a superficial similarity. In Romancing the Stone, Kathleen Turner plays an author who lives vicariously through her stories and in actuality is quite shy and unadventurous. In In Like Flynn, Jenny Seagrove plays a woman who poses as the researcher for a reclusive author though secretly she is the author. Jenny Seagrove's character actually seeks danger and excitment, she just needs a cover story in order for her to feel comfortable in her actions.

In Like Flynn premiered on television in the summer of 1985. Even though the project was written and produced by the successful Glen A. Larson, In Like Flynn did not get turned into a weekly series. The movie had subsequent re-airings in the US and UK throughout the rest of the rest 1980s.

On a personal note, I think it is a shame that In Like Flynn did not get picked up. I think that the show would have made a terrific series with a lot of options as to plots and subject matter. Not mention that Jenny Seagrove was at the height of her powers at the time and looked absolutely beautiful in the pilot film. It would have been interesting to see how her career would have changed if she had had a successful American TV show.
