Jenny Seagrove: "Country Bumpkin English Rose"

Here's a great newspaper article about actress Jenny Seagrove from 1992. In this piece, Jenny Seagrove talks frankly about her career and love life. At this point she was still in a relationship with director Michael Winner and this is discussed quite a bit. As you might know, 1992 was the year that Jenny Seagrove transitioned back into stage work after doing film and television steadily for a decade. It is mentioned in the article that she is doing a stage play in Wales at the time of publication and that her second Sherlock Holmes project would be released shortly. I'm not sure if it is mentioned outright that she would be giving up movies and TV indefinitely at this point (she wouldn't do another film until 1999).

Clip of Jenny Seagrove on Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense

Between starring in two classic miniseries, Diana and A Woman of Substance, Jenny Seagrove co-starred alongside American actor Dirk Benedict in an episode of the anthology series Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense. In an episode called 'Mark of the Devil' about a tattoo that takes on a life of it's own, Jenny Seagrove plays a beautiful bride to be. In this clip, Jenny Seagrove and Dirk Benedict chat about their forthcoming marriage, just before things begin to spiral out of control.

Clip of Jenny Seagrove in The Woman in White

In 1982, Jenny Seagrove starred in an adaptation of the Wilkie Collins classic The Woman in White. It was her first real screen work (she had, however, appeared in a short film two years earlier) and quite a substantial role to begin a screen career with. In this scene from The Woman in White, Laura Fairlie (Jenny Seagrove) and Walter Hartright (Daniel Gerroll) pledge their love for each other.

Another clip of Jenny Seagrove in Deadly Game

Jenny Seagrove in the In Like Flynn intro

Here is the introductory sequence for the 1985 pilot film In Like Flynn starring Jenny Seagrove. What a great weekly show this would have been! If you watch closely you'll see footage from other movies used. One of the most obvious is a clip from one of Jenny Seagrove's earlier movies, Nate and Hayes, where Tommy Lee Jones (or rather a stuntman in a bright red shirt) falls against a cliff when a primitive bridge collapses. I don't recognize some of the footage but I could swear that there are clips from the 1980 film The Stunt Man.

Clip of Jenny Seagrove in Incident at Victoria Falls

In 1992, Jenny Seagrove portrayed Lillie Langtry in Incident at Victoria Falls, the second of two projects filmed under the 'Sherlock Holmes: The Golden Years' banner. Alongside Christopher Lee as Sherlock Holmes and Patrick Macnee as Dr. Watson, Jenny Seagrove gives delightful performance as the saucy and flamboyantly dressed Lillie Langtry.

In 1991, Jenny Seagrove co-starred alongside Roddy McDowall and Michael Beck in Deadly Game. The movie originally aired on the USA cable TV network in the summer of 1991 and also featured a host of other B-list actors including Mitch Ryan, Marc Singer, Soon-Tek Oh, Frederic Lehne and John Pleshette. Jenny Seagrove actually plays a major role in the campy thriller and it marked her final appearance on American television.

Promotional images of Jenny Seagrove for In Like Flynn

In 1985, Jenny Seagrove starred in In Like Flynn. The TV movie was a pilot for a proposed series, loosely based on the film Romancing the Stone. The project did not end up getting made into a weekly TV show but the pilot film still exists and stands a fine piece of campy mid-'80s entertainment.

Jenny Seagrove as Terri McLane in In Like Flynn

Besides star Jenny Seagrove, In Like Flynn also featured a number of other semi-well known actors. The biggest name in the film would obviously be William Conrad, who was well known for his work on television. Veteran actors Eddie Albert, Robert Webber and Maury Chaykin also had roles in the project. Jenny Seagrove's 'leading man' was played by William Gray Espy, an actor who had only worked occasionally beginning in 1972. He gives a capable performance in In Like Flynn but one feels that perhaps his role could have been better cast.

Here are two photos of Jenny Seagrove and her co-star William Gray Espy in In Like Flynn:

Promotional images of Jenny Seagrove for The Sign of Four

Jenny Seagrove, looking lovely as ever, portrayed Miss Mary Morstan in a 1987 UK television adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Sign of Four. Jeremy Brett plays Sherlock Holmes and Edward Hardwicke plays Dr. Watson, both to great effect. The fantastic Ronald Lacey is also featured, as well as British television veteran John Thaw.

Jenny Seagrove - pin-up girl?

This is a somewhat uncharacteristic photo of Jenny Seagrove. It looks a bit like a pin-up style image, hands above the hips and decked out in very fashionable late-'80s clothing. Very nice indeed!

Here's a photo of Jenny Seagrove and Hayley Mills performing onstage in a play (I'm unsure of the title). You might recall that the pair also appeared in the 1988 mystery film Appointment with Death.

Jenny Seagrove in Don't Go Breaking My Heart

In 1999, Jenny Seagrove co-starred with American actor Anthony Edwards in the romantic comedy Don't Go Breaking My Heart. Jenny Seagrove had not appeared on television or film since 1992, so this movie can be considered a comeback of sorts for her. Don't Go Breaking My Heart represents the beginning of the second era of Jenny Seagrove's screen career and she would go on to find success on TV in the 2000s.

Jenny Seagrove in Savage Islands

In 1983, Jenny Seagrove had her first big feature film role in a movie called Nate and Hayes. In the UK, the movie was given the infinitely better title of Savage Islands. Regardless of what you call it, one thing is certain: Jenny Seagrove was absolutely lovely in the film. Click here for some other photos and information. Meanwhile, here are two great photos from the movie:
